Guidelines for the AFA Rookie Recruiting Cycle

In the interest of developing a more coordinated job market that benefits all involved, the AFA Board of Directors has approved the following recommended guidelines regarding the rookie job market. Please consider these guidelines as you participate in the 2023-24 job market.

Timing of offers and “exploding” offers

In order to ensure that the job market remains sufficiently synchronized and thick, and that candidates have a chance to compare offers, the AFA recommends that employers leave job offers open (i.e. do not require candidates to accept or decline) until at least February 12 (midnight).

The AFA also strongly recommends that employers give candidates at least two weeks to consider their job offer.  We recognize that offers made late in the job market season (e.g., March or later) may be of shorter duration.  In some circumstances, employers are under heavy pressure to give less time to candidates for various reasons.  If that is absolutely necessary, we recommend that employers give candidates a minimum of one week to consider the offer, and that candidates be given advance notice of this (e.g. at the flyout stage) whenever possible. Rationale: Recently, there is concern about a rise in “exploding offers” – i.e., offers for which candidates are given too few days to sufficiently consider the offer and their alternatives. This can prevent candidates from learning about their options or comparing offers, and at the extreme can be coercive.  Giving candidates two weeks (or, late in the job market season, at least one week) to consider an offer is a reasonable standard.

These guidelines are designed for the AFA rookie recruiting cycle and do not pertain to recruiting cycles for other job markets such as the FMA or European job markets.

Update on Submission Timeline and Editorial Team for the Journal of Finance: Insights and Perspectives

As we work to finalize key details for the forthcoming AFA journal, the Journal of Finance: Insights and Perspectives, we have decided to postpone the date for accepting submissions. We will announce a new start date for submissions shortly. We are also delighted to announce that Arvind Krishnamurthy (Stanford GSB) will be joining the editorial team alongside Johannes Stroebel, Paola Sapienza, and Ralph Koijen as a co-editor. Should you have any questions or require further clarification, please do not hesitate to contact us at admin@afajof.org.

The AFA is excited to announce a new association journal, the Journal of Finance: Insights and Perspectives. The Journal of Finance: Insights and Perspectives’ objective is to publish leading research across all the major fields of financial research that are of the same quality and importance as those in the Journal of Finance. The journal publishes four issues per year containing articles on a broad range of topics. The second issue in June every year is dedicated to Perspectives, while the other issues contain Insights articles.

Insights articles are shorter original research papers where their key insight can be conveyed succinctly. Perspectives articles synthesize lessons learned from active lines of research and outline future research directions that are ripe for inquiry. Perspectives articles are either stand-alone articles or part of a collection of a symposium containing several articles on a common topic. Symposia will offer complementary perspectives on a common topic from a diverse set of authors.

The journal will limit the length of published papers. Manuscripts without exhibits may not exceed 7,000 words. Each exhibit reduces the maximum allowance by 200 words (e.g., a manuscript with 5 exhibits has a maximum of 6,000 words). The maximum number of exhibits (figures or tables) is five. These guidelines apply to both Insights and Perspectives articles.

The first editorial response after submission will be either a reject decision or a “conditional acceptance” that limits expositional changes. The objective of this quick turnaround is to reduce the ex ante uncertainty about potential publication and to limit the number of revisions.

The editorial team will invite an Advisory Board to provide comments, feedback, and suggestions on the direction of the new journal. Also, there will be a Board of Editors with Associate Editors who will assist in the editorial process.

AFA PhD Student Poster Session Submissions – Now Closed

Please submit your paper/poster by July 31.

In 2024, the AFA will again plan to host a PhD Student Poster Session. Unlike prior years, where students were nominated for Travel Grants independent of the poster session, the AFA has repurposed those funds to help PhD students, with an accepted research poster, to defray the costs of attending our 2024 Annual Meeting, scheduled for January 5-7, 2024 in San Antonio, Texas. Find additional details on the Annual Meeting page of the AFA website.
